2020 Summer Program Cancellation Information

Cancellation Announcement

After careful and thoughtful discussion, and with the health and safety of our instructors, staff, and students in mind, we have made the decision to cancel all in-person pre-college programs for the 2020 summer. These programs are the High School Summer Scholars Program, High School Summer Institutes, High School Summer Academy, and Middle School Summer Challenge. Per our cancellation policy, any program fees paid to WashU, including the nonrefundable deposit, will be refunded.

We apologize for any inconvenience this announcement may cause. Please know we do not make this decision lightly, and we understand-and share in-the deep disappointment that this decision brings. We thank you for your patience as we process refunds as quickly as possible. Questions not addressed below, may be directed to precollege@wustl.edu.

Online Options

Students can still experience WashU online this summer through our Early College Scholars Program. This program offers the opportunity for students to enroll in course work and engage in our online Pre-College Community. Additional online course listings will be available May 1.

Refunds

Is my $500 nonrefundable deposit being refunded?

Yes. We are refunding any payments made towards the program fee including the nonrefundable deposit.

When can I expect my refund?

If you paid by credit card, these refunds will be processed beginning April 6. Depending upon your credit card company, you should see a credit to your account within 7-10 business days.

If you paid by check, these refunds will be processed beginning April 6. You can expect a check sent to the home address we have on file by the end of April.

If I paid by credit card can I get a check instead (or vice versa)?

No. We can only process refunds based on the original method of payment.

I sent a check with my registration forms, but it was never deposited. What happens next?

Per interim University policy, our office began working remotely on March 23. Any registration materials received during our time working remotely have not been processed and are currently on hold at the campus mail room. When we return to campus, we will shred all checks received (or can return to students if that is the preference). We will not be depositing any payments.

I'm planning to attend next summer, can I just defer my payment to next year?

Because we have not determined 2021 programs, we cannot automatically defer payments.

I received a scholarship for this summer, can I use it to enroll in courses through Early College Scholars?

Scholarship awards for in-person programs are not transferable to other programs including Early College Scholars. We will complete a second review of scholarship applications and send new scholarship amounts for Early College Scholars on May 1.

Deferring Admission

I'm a current freshmen or sophomore admitted for this summer, will I have to reapply for next summer?

You will not have to reapply for next summer. All admitted freshmen and sophomores (graduating 2022 or 2023) will have their admission deferred to next summer if they should so choose. In October you will receive an email with directions on submitting an Admission Deferment Form for the 2021 summer.

Please know that programs for 2021 have not been determined. It is possible that the program you were admitted to this summer may not be offered next summer.

If you were admitted as part of a CBO partnership, please see below.

I am a current freshman or sophomore wait listed for this summer, will I have to reapply for next summer?

You will not have to reapply for next summer. All wait listed freshmen and sophomores (graduating 2022 or 2023) will have the option to attend next summer. In October you will receive an email with directions on submitting an Admission Deferment Form for the 2021 summer.

Please know that programs for 2021 have not been determined. It is possible that the program you were wait listed to this summer may not be offered next summer.

If you are part of a CBO partnership, please see below.

I'm a junior who was admitted or wait listed, what options will I have for next summer (since I won't be eligible for pre-college programs)?

For current juniors (graduating in 2021), we are working on program options for you for next summer and will contact you in October with details.

If you were admitted as part of a CBO partnership, please see below.

I was admitted to Middle School Summer Challenge, will I have to reapply for next summer?

You will not have to reapply. All admitted students will have their admission deferred to next summer if they so choose. In October you will receive an email with directions on submitting an Admission Deferment Form for the 2021 summer. Current 8th grade students will have the option to defer admission to one of our high school programs.

Please know that courses for 2021 Middle School Summer Challenge have not been determined. It is possible that the courses you were admitted to this summer may not be offered next summer.

I am a member of a CBO that partners with your programs. What will happen with my admission?

We are working with all CBOs to determine how they would like to handle admission for next summer. You should contact your CBO if you have questions.

I received a scholarship for this summer, will that transfer to next summer?

You will need to submit a new scholarship application for next summer. We'll provide information about that process in the October email.

I am an admitted freshmen or sophomore, but my first choice wasn't open when I applied this summer. Will I have a chance to choose it next summer?

There will be an option to choose another program on the Admission Deferment Form

Please know that programs for 2021 have not been determined. It is possible that your first choice program may not be offered next summer.

What if I choose to defer my admission to next summer, but the program fee goes up? Will I have to pay the increased program fee?

No. Your admission deferment locks in the program fee for this year.

If I choose to take an online course this summer through Early College Scholars, can I still defer admission for next summer to the in-person programs?

Yes! You can take an online course this summer and still choose to defer admission for next summer to an in-person program.
