Instructor Spotlight: Patrick Andrews

Patrick Andrews is a fourth-year PhD student in the John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics at Washington University in St. Louis. He received his B.A. (2021) from the University of Dallas in Greek, Latin, and Philosophy Studies, and received his M.A. (2023) in Classics from Washington University in St. Louis. His prior teaching experiences include both running discussion sections and teaching beginning Latin to undergraduate students.

His research interests center around the Greek philosopher Plato and how he uses the city of Athens as a backdrop for his philosophic hero Socrates. Patrick is interested in what makes someone worthy of admiration: that person’s personality, strengths, and sometimes even what most people would consider flaws. This interest inspired the summer institute course on ancient Greek heroes and heroines. He is also interested in what poetry can teach us about a people’s values and worldviews.

In his off time and weekends, Patrick and his wife like playing with their two children, cooking together, and trying to be a hero and heroine in whatever small way they can.
