Bayla Kamens is a PhD candidate in the Biggs Department of Classics studying ancient pedagogy. In addition to their work on teaching and learning, they have broad interests throughout the ancient world including ancient textile production, Greek lyric poetry and meter, and ancient music. They put these interests into practice through projects such as raising silkworms, growing saffron, spinning yarn, building ancient looms, and playing and composing for the ancient Greek lyre.
Kamens is committed to public and open access scholarship and has self-published an open access intermediate Greek commentary. They can often be found online in Greek and Latin learning spaces answering questions or running events. Their dissertation will explore the intersection between Second Language Acquisition theory and classical tradition in the teaching of ancient Greek. Kamens will be teaching this summer's Ancient Studies Institute.
